A firm commitment  remains to the original goals of the organization which became those of the NAHS itself.  Programs are developed for the purpose of:-

  • promoting a greater interest in heathers
  • furthering the knowledge of these plants
  • promoting their uses and cultivation

Ongoing activities include an annual plant sale, a library, a speakers' bureau, garden tours,  research and  botanizing.

The following are current activities:-

  • establishment of a public heather garden in the City of Fortuna, CA
  • the creation of a national heather collection at the proposed Humbolt Botanical Garden
  • refurbishing of several heather gardens in Northern California
  • a pilot project to determine the feasibility of providing plants for other public gardens in cooperation with the NAHS
  • cooperation with the NAHS in establishing the hardiness ratings of heaths and heathers throughout North America.
